Here is Why We Don’t Feel Earth’s Rotation

According to science, the earth rotates on its own axis and for that matter, it's constantly spinning. By constantly spinning, it means that it neither slows down nor comes to a halt. Its spinning is smooth and constant. Now the earth basically feels solid beneath us. It actually feels like we are motionless since we cannot feel the rotation or any sort of movement signifying that we are also rotating. It’s really strange that we are actually living on a rotating giant sphere.

The truth is that our giant planet actually rotates at a very high speed. According to science, the speed of earth’s rotation at the Equator is approximately 1670 kilometers per hour or 1000 miles per hour. This simply means that you’re traveling at a speed of about 464 meters per second at the Equator and lesser if you’re located near the north/south poles.

Now that’s quite fast, isn’t it? Can you even imagine running at that speed? Of course not!

So the question is, why don’t we ever feel the rotation? Why does it seem like we are completely motionless? Is it that the earth does not rotate fast enough for us to detect the motion? Is there a theory behind this strange phenomenon?

Well, there is an explanation for this.

According to scientists, chances of us feeling our planet rotating are slim to none because you and everything else on it is traveling at the same exact speed. Another reason is that the Earth’s motion is super-smooth. No bumps or halts along the way- because that’s the only way we could actually feel its movement.

Think of being on a train that is traveling at a constant speed and altitude. Even if you unbuckle your seat and move around the train, you cannot feel its movement. The only way to perceive the movement of the train is if you glance outside the window at the trees, mountains, people, or buildings. The reason is that you, everyone on the train, and the train itself are moving at the same speed. You would only feel the movement if the train stops, speeds up, or changes the route.

So Why Does the Earth Spin Constantly?

The simple reason is- there is nothing stopping it or slowing it down. The ride is incredibly smooth and constant. The moon and the other planets rotate on their own axes, the same way our planet does. This means that the solar system is organized in such a way that nothing can interfere with this balance/process.

If for example a powerful external force interferes with this balance, then the planets and everything else would collide, creating a huge disruption. But there is no chance of this happening considering that everything in our solar system has been spinning for billions of years.

Isn’t it strange living in a place that is constantly moving yet we don’t feel a thing? Well, that’s just how mysterious and fascinating our universe is. All we can do is appreciate what it has to offer as we continue marveling at its wonders. So the next time you lie on the ground gazing up the sky waiting to feel the ground beneath you shift, well just know that it will never happen simply because you are moving right along with it!
