The Genius of Mankind - Great Minds in Science and Technology


Genius, intelligent, brilliant, mastermind; all of these words are representative of a unique set of individuals who set themselves apart by their exceptional intellectual capabilities, creative powers or any other natural ability. Not only their abilities but the passion of a genius is beyond any measure – and this passion translates into innovation and subsequently, inventions.

Computer programmer Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, for instance is a key catalyst for many of the innovations that Bill Gates spearheaded including the BASIC programming language and DOS operating systems. Allen’s contributions brought about a technological revolution by redefining the landscape of personal computing.

Similarly, physicist Federico Faggin is the mind behind the greatest invention of the 20th century. He may rightly be labelled the founding father of Silicon Valley when he arrived in Palo Alto in 1968 and created the MOS Silicon Gate, which is the basis of all modern computer technology. Soon after, he invented the microprocessor for commercial production at Intel but later set up his own company which produced and sold microprocessors.

Stephen Hawking’s name is seen as synonymous with genius. This theoretical physicist and renowned for his scientific brilliance and for the triumph of mind over body that can be seen in his work. Confined to a wheelchair by motor neuron disease, he speaks through a computer-mediated voice simulator but has had a massive influence in his field through research and writings on gravitational singularity theorems, black holes, parallel dimensions and quantum mechanics which have given mankind a deeper insight into the universe. He is best known for his research on gravitationally collapsed stars or 'Black Holes' are prone to evaporation through a process now known as 'Hawking Radiation' in his honor.


Another trailblazer, particularly for women, is Shirley Ann Jackson who was the first African-American theoretical physics doctorate at MIT and is now considered amongst the most accomplished scholars in her field. Her work on semiconductors at Bell Laboratories has been mostly influential, in addition to more than 100 research articles she has published during her time there.

The genius mind is no doubt the catalyst of innovation and even human evolution. And this has proven more accurate in the field of science and technology; from Steve Jobs, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking and many, many others plenty of great minds have challenged pre-existing notions and opened unforeseen avenues into human progression and transformed the world as we know it.
